After being dry for nearly 30 years, the Sakri River flows again. A 90-kilometer community-led revival that proved rivers can come back to life — when people walk alongside them.

01 · Overview

When a river speaks, people listen.

Bolti Nadi — meaning 'The Speaking River' — is Meer Foundation's flagship environmental initiative, launched in 2016. The vision was simple but radical: give rivers a voice, and let communities hear what they have to say. The Sakri River in Chhattisgarh had been dying for decades. Bolti Nadi walked its entire 90-kilometer length, listened to the communities along its banks, documented everything, and then worked with the government to bring it back to life.

The vision

Rivers are not just water sources — they are the spine of civilization, culture, and ecology. When a river dies, a civilization frays.

The method

Walk the entire river. Listen to every village. Document everything. Submit findings to the government. Work together to fix it.

The result

From 2019 to 2023, the Sakri River flowed continuously for four years — 12 months a year, from origin to confluence. A river that had been dry for 30 years.

The Speaking River. The name 'Bolti Nadi' carries a deliberate message: rivers speak through their flow, their ecology, their cultural memory, and the communities that depend on them. When we silence a river, we silence a way of life. Bolti Nadi exists to make rivers heard again.

02 · The Problem

How a river dies

The Sakri River originates in the Maikal hills near the Bhoramdev Temple in Kabirdham district, Chhattisgarh. It flows through 59 villages across two districts before merging with the Half River at Darhi village in Bemetara district. For centuries, it was the lifeline of the region — providing drinking water, irrigation, and cultural identity. Then it died.

30 years of drought

By 2016, the Sakri had been dry for nearly three decades. Villages that once drank from the river now depended on borewells drilled up to 1,000 feet deep — with diminishing returns and dangerous water quality.

Urban pollution

In Kawardha city, the river's largest urban stretch, sewage and solid waste were dumped directly into the riverbed. The water turned black and foul-smelling. Aquatic life was virtually extinct.

Failed infrastructure

Anicuts and check dams built along the river were trapping water upstream while downstream areas remained bone dry. The structures looked good on paper but failed in practice.

Ecological collapse

Deforestation in the Maikal hills reduced the river's catchment capacity. Riparian vegetation was gone. Bank erosion at Rajanawagaon and Kodar villages had widened the river dangerously, threatening agricultural land.

Cultural erosion

The river's cultural significance was fading. Elders remembered when the whole village drank from the river and maintained 'pasi' (natural check structures). Younger generations saw the river as a drain, not a lifeline.

Groundwater crisis

With the river dead, villages drilled deeper and deeper borewells. At 1,000 feet, water contains harmful chemicals. The groundwater table was collapsing faster than it could recharge.

03 · The 90-km Walk

Four days. Ninety kilometers. One river brought back to life.

In April 2019, the Bolti Nadi team embarked on a 90-kilometer on-foot expedition along the entire length of the Sakri River — from its origin at Kariyama village in Kabirdham district to its confluence with the Half River at Darhi village in Bemetara district. Over four continuous days, the team walked every kilometer, visited every village, collected water samples, documented ecological conditions, consulted with communities, and recorded cultural heritage along the river's course.

Day 1

Kariyama to Chaura

The journey began at the river's origin in the Maikal hills, where the water was crystal clear and sweet. By the time the team reached Chaura village, they found an anicut trapping water upstream while downstream was completely dry — a stark lesson that one-size-fits-all solutions don't work for rivers.

Day 2

Heritage sites & dying culture

The team visited the 14th-century Cherki Mahal (a Shiva temple named after goats that sheltered there) and the 11th-century Bhoramdev Temple — 'the Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh.' The temple priest spoke about water: 'Lord Shiva is called Gangadhar — the bearer of Ganga. This is our cultural relationship with water.' He warned that indiscriminate borewell drilling was destroying the groundwater table.

Day 3

Kawardha city & urban pollution

By the time the river reached Kawardha city, it was black with sewage and solid waste. The team documented the complete collapse of aquatic life. A local youth reported that the river's biological ecosystem was virtually dead. Downstream, at Rajanawagaon and Kodar villages, severe bank erosion had widened the river dramatically, threatening farmland.

Day 4

Darhi village — confluence

After four days and 90 kilometers, the team reached Darhi village where the Sakri merges with the Half River. The journey was not just about covering distance — it was about understanding the river's soul. Every observation, every interview, every water sample was compiled into a comprehensive research report with actionable recommendations.

04 · Key Achievements

From a dry riverbed to four years of continuous flow

The research report submitted to the district administrations of Kawardha and Bemetara triggered an integrated rejuvenation program. The results were historic: from 2019 to 2023, the Sakri River flowed continuously for four consecutive years — 12 months a year, from origin to confluence. A river that had been dead for 30 years was alive again.

Riverbank plantation

Commercial and medicinal trees planted along riverbanks across 59 villages under the Mukhyamantri Vriksh Sampada Yojana.

Sewage treatment plant

Kawardha Municipal Corporation established a ₹2 crore STP to stop city sewage from entering the river — a direct result of the Bolti Nadi report.

Check dams & gabions

Check dams and gabion structures constructed at erosion-prone sites to prevent bank cutting and improve groundwater recharge.

Desilting & cleaning

MGNREGA labor teams carried out large-scale desilting and cleaning across almost the entire river belt, significantly improving water flow.

Documentary film

The 90-km walk was documented on film. Screened at educational institutions across Chhattisgarh and submitted to film festivals in 50+ countries.

Commonland partnership

Commonland, a globally recognized restoration organization, came to work on the Sakri River and partnered with Meer Foundation in 2025.

05 · Methodology

A replicable template for river revival

The Bolti Nadi methodology is not a formula — it is a template. It was designed to be adapted for any river in India. The core principle: no two rivers are the same, no two villages face the same problems, and there is no single solution. The methodology has six best practices.

A continuing challenge. After 2023, some unscientific interventions — including indiscriminate sand mining near the river's origin villages — caused the river to start drying again. Bolti Nadi's lesson: river revival is not a one-time event. It is a continuous process that requires scientific vision, community participation, and long-term commitment.
